KANGAROOS NEED YOUR VOTE!

How to vote for kangaroos in the 2025 Federal election.

Kangaroos can't vote, but you can! Find out how you can use your right to vote to protect our national icon and help us end the world's largest slaughter of land-based wildlife. 🦘

This scorecard has been prepared by a group of kangaroo organisations to raise awareness on the policies of parties and independent candidates in the upcoming 2025 Australian Federal election regarding the killing of kangaroos. Information was gathered by contacting parties and candidates directly and dependent upon response.

We were disappointed, however not shocked, by the lack of response from the overwhelming majority of parties and candidates.

Thank you Animal Justice Party and The Greens for your responses.

Please see below for the full answers from the Animal Justice Party and The Greens.

Animal Justice Party

1. Does your party support a moratorium on the commercial killing of kangaroos?

The Animal Justice Party (AJP) supports not only a moratorium on the commercial killing of kangaroos, but seeks to ban the commercial, non-commercial and ‘recreational’ killing of kangaroos in all jurisdictions. See our Kangaroos Policy, available at https://www.animaljusticeparty.org/kangaroos

2. Does your party support the call to undertake extensive and genuine consultation with First Nations people to seek their views regarding the commercial and non-commercial killing of kangaroos?

Yes. See our First Nations Policy at https://www.animaljusticeparty.org/first_nations

3. Will your party invest in innovative non-lethal solutions to perceived conflicts between kangaroos and landholders, developers, and road users?’

Yes, the AJP will fund research into non-lethal alternatives for environmental management, including fertility control, wildlife-safe deterrents and others, and fund evidence-based approaches to reduce wildlife road fatalities, such as virtual fencing.

In the absence of a total ban on the killing of wildlife through government-sanctioned killing programs, recreational hunting, commercial industries and lethal control methods, we support increased monitoring and regulation.

6. Does your party support the call to invest and examine the potential socio-economic benefits of kangaroo eco-tourism and the true economic value of commercial killing of kangaroos?

The Greens

1. Does your party support a moratorium on the commercial killing of kangaroos?

Yes, the NSW Greens support a prohibition on the commercial killing of kangaroos, and multiple Greens MPs have called for a moratorium on commercial killing. The commercial killing of kangaroos is cruel, inhumane and fast losing its social licence. The Australian Greens are concerned about animal cruelty and suffering in the commercial killing of kangaroos.

You can read more about our plans to protect the welfare of animals here, including the establishment of an independent office of animal welfare that would help address the cruelty in kangaroo killing including ending the practice of commercial killing of kangaroos.

2. Does your party support the call to undertake extensive and genuine consultation with First Nations people to seek their views regarding the commercial and non-commercial killing of kangaroos?

Yes, a key principle of the Green’s animal welfare policy is that all animal welfare laws should take First Nations knowledge and cultural practices into consideration. The Greens strongly support calls to undertake extensive and genuine consultation with First Nations people to seek their views regarding the commercial and non-commercial killing of kangaroos.

3. Will your party invest in innovative non-lethal solutions to perceived conflicts between kangaroos and landholders, developers, and road users?

Yes, the Greens support non-lethal solutions to these issues.

4. Does your party support the call to allow international and independent expert review of the methodology and assumptions used for estimating macropod populations in states in Australia?

Yes.

5. Does your party support the call for monitoring and regulation at the point of kill of commercial and non-commercial killing of kangaroos to guarantee compliance with the national code of practice?

Yes, the Greens support calls for better monitoring and regulation to protect against animal cruelty. We have seen too many distressing reports of kangaroos dying slow, painful deaths and orphaned joeys suffering.

6. Does your party support the call to invest and examine the potential socio-economic benefits of kangaroo eco-tourism and the true economic value of commercial killing of kangaroos?

Yes. The Greens are focused on building an economy that promotes eco-friendly practices. We plan to prioritise sustainable development, transforming trade and tourism into drivers of environmental care. We note that the commercial killing of kangaroos is cruel, inhumane and fast losing its social licence, with companies increasingly turning away from kangaroo leather in favour of non-animal based synthetic material.

7. Does your party support increased funding and support for wildlife rescue and rehabilitation?

The Greens have recently called for a federal investment of $20 million a year into a National Wildlife Rescue Strategy. This new injection of regular and guaranteed federal funding will provide critical funding to businesses, organisations and volunteers across the country who provide rescue, care and veterinary services for injured and endangered wildlife. The strategy will fund critical wildlife rescue and rehabilitation services including:

● Emergency wildlife responders

● Rescue operations

● Rehabilitation programs

● Veterinary treatment of native animals (in wildlife hospitals and volunteer care).

This Federal election, let's vote for the for best outcome for our national icon.
